The singing orchestra

category: Essay
published in: das Orchester 04/2010, Page 38

Marco Frei speaks to Thomas Hengelbrock, currently director of the Balthasar Neumann Choir and Ensemble, about his ideas of historically performed performance practice, in particular regarding relations between orchestral and vocal parts and the uses of vibrato. As incoming chief conductor of the NDR Sinfonieorchester and with his Tannhäuser début at the Bayreuth Festival Hengelbrock sees ample opportunity to explore these ideas.
