In 1989 the author published a study on young highly gifted musicians at the start of their professional life. Twenty years later, in a follow-up, he asks what has happened to those musicians and how their private lives as well as professional careers have developed during this period. This first part of the article begins with a semantic analysis of the notions of profession and vocation, highlighting the apparently predestined, innate characteristic pertaining to the idea of „vocation“.
