Music for the virtuosi?

When classical musicians go jazz...

category: Essay

Many classical musicians are also great fans of jazz music. The article by Buhles explores this fascination. He argues that often it is the appeal of the infinite variations and improvisations which draws classical musicians to jazz music; yet he also warns that technical virtuosity is only part of living, vibrant jazz and it would be a misunderstanding to overemphasize technique. The article lists more or less successful excursions, such as Bernstein's in 1956 or Rattle's in 1999, and covers a number of interpreters, reaching from Boulez to Gulda and from Renée Fleming to Thomas Quasthoff with various available recordings.
